Noelle Kim, a seventh grader from Mahwah’s Ramapo Ridge Middle School, Laura Granada, a seventh grader in Upper Saddle River’s Cavallini Middle School, and Alison Perino, a sixth grader from Smith School in Ramsey were the local winners.
Their posters were among more than 450,000 entries featuring the theme, "Peace Brings the World Together."
“It is obvious that these young people have strong ideas about what peace means to them,” said Jim Murphy, the president of the Saddle River Valley Club. "I’m so proud that we were able to provide them with the opportunity to share their visions.”
Posters created by Kim, Granada, and Perino are eligible for district, national, and international levels of competition. One out of 23 merit award winners will earn $5,000, along with a trip with two of their family members to a special awards ceremony. Finalists will receive a certificate and $500.
“Our club is cheering these young people on as their posters advance through the competition,” Murphy said. “We hope that their vision will ultimately be shared with others around the world.”
The Saddle River Valley Lions Club supports communities and causes in Mahwah, Ramsey, Upper Saddle River, and Allendale and is part of a parent organization.
